The spirit of compassion is exemplified by the Milagro Foundation. Started in 1998 by Carlos and Deborah Santana, the Milagro Foundation helps underprivileged children around the world. The foundation provides grants to community-based, grass-roots organizations that work with children and youth, especially those at risk and disadvantaged due to such factors as poor health, illiteracy, or insufficient educational and cultural opportunities.

Shelley Brown, Executive Director of the Milagro Foundation shared about what they do:

Can you give us a little background on the Milagro Foundation?

It is all in our website. For history of the Milagro Foundation, please visit our website at www.milagrofoundation.org

What's been one of the more gratifying things you've experienced at the Milagro Foundation?

Seeing the faces of children in a program that is making a difference in their lives.

Being a kid these days can be a challenge. Is there one real "turn around" situation that comes to mind the foundation has been involved in where children have gone from a bad situation to a much better one?

In Haiti, none of the children went to school in this one area of the country.  A Haitian man named Gerry who lives in Kentucky asked us for funding to start a school there.  Besides his church, we were the only ones who took a chance on him.  They are now on their 3rd school, educating hundreds of children. Please see Light For All on our website.

What signs do you see that some people are getting more involved in making a better world?

We receive over 3000 grant requests each year from people and agencies that are working to improve the lives of underprivileged and underrepresented children.

Do you have any special events or programs coming up in the future?

Hmm, a benefit at a Bay Area Santana concert in the fall 2005.

When you think about the children of today, what makes you optimistic?

Every child can learn and grow and contribute to a better world if someone gives them a chance, shows them love, compassion and care.  I have seen so many children who wouldn’t have a chance without the tutors, health clinics, interventions in juvenile halls, mentors, teachers, artists, musicians who have developed grass roots programs to make a difference in the lives of children.

If individuals or corporate donors want to help out, how do they contact you?

It is all on our website.  Please read it.  You will get so much information.
